A CITY delegation to Japan is spreading goodwill and strengthening ties with two major foreign enterprises, Canon and Kirin Brewery.
The Zhuhai Delegation is headed by Deng Weilong, secretary of the municipal Party Committee. They met with Canon Inc President and CEO Fujio Mitarai and Kirin Brewery President and CEO Haruo Naito separately and visited the headquarters of the two companies in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Deng pointed out that Canon has brought efficiency and convenience to global consumers' work and life with its pacesetting corporate spirit during the 70 years since it was founded. Canon Zhuhai, which came into operation 16 years ago, has been growing rapidly and has become the frontrunner of foreign-funded enterprises in Zhuhai, Deng said. Zhuhai will always continue to support the development of Canon and other foreign-funded businesses so as to boost the city's foreign trade. Fujio Mitarai showed whole-hearted appreciation for the great support of the Zhuhai government, announcing that further efforts will be made to develop Canon Zhuhai.
Haruo Naito spoke highly of the great achievements Zhuhai Kirin Brewery has made. The company had a growth rate of 30 per cent in the first half of the year and its new plant in Tangjiawan is expected to come into operation in the middle of next year, he revealed.
Founded in 1990 with registered capital of $65 million, Canon Zhuhai has 9,000 employees. Its sales revenue hit $1 billion with 4 million digital cameras and 2 million colour laser printers last year, accounting for 25 and 80 per cent of the total of the same category in the group corporation. Kirin Zhuhai Brewery Co Ltd was made the wholly owned subsidiary of Kirin Brewery Co Ltd in January 2006 with registered capital of $74 million and capability of 120,000 tonnes. The annual capability is expected to increase to 400,000 tonnes with the new plant.
The delegation visited Atami, a Japanese sister city of Zhuhai, last Tuesday. Atami Mayor Ichio Kawaguchi, along with other senior officials of business, international exchange, education and tourism, met with the delegation. Ichio Kawaguchi said that various exchanges have been conducted between the two cities since the partnership was established, which is positive for enhancing friendship between the two cities and countries. Deng noted that the two sister cities have a lot in common. Extensive exchanges in science and technology, culture, education, tourism and visits of residents and students have contributed to deepening mutual understanding.
Friendly exchanges between the two cities began at the end of the last century and the sister-city relationship was officially begun in July 2004.
Atami, meaning "hot sea" in Japanese, is one of Japan's best-known traditional hot springs resorts. The city is surrounded by stunning scenery, with Sagami Bay in the southeast and the Hakone Mountains in the northwest. Blessed with warm weather throughout the year, Atami has been loved by generations of Japanese and millions of visitors.
The delegation also visited Yokohama on Tuesday afternoon. The Port of Yokohama was opened in 1859 as Japan's first modern international trade port and has now become the No.1 cruise port in Japan. It has 24 large berths and more than 100 ship container routes to the rest of the world, 23 of which lead to China, the largest number in the port.
