TWO gala events in the city drew worldwide attention on New Year's Eve. Fireworks blasted off the old year while a floating clock hovered facedown from a helium balloon to welcome in the new over Ocean Spring Resort. Meanwhile the audience at the Zhuhai Sports Centre shared the year change moment with 1.2 billion people around the world via the CCTV International Bilingual New Year's Eve Live Show.
The stage, like a huge clock facing upward in the centre of the stadium, was brilliantly illuminated, and bedecked with long, broad coloured ribbons mirroring flickering flames. Precisely at 10pm, the beautiful Zhuhai Fisher Maiden ascended slowly skyward from centre stage, kicking off the bilingual New Year's Eve Live Show.
"Bless China, Bless the world!" the voice broadcast from Zhuhai to the world over CCTV Channels 4 and 9 proclaimed. Then a TV hostess delivered a poetic narration stating: It is a place for blessing. The sea is but a few thousand metres away from us. With 100 islands in the sea, the city is dubbed Pearl of South China.
Images of hundreds of smiles, screened from photographs of thousands of local candidates, flashed on the surrounding electronic full-colour screens, providing a lively background for the stage. Accompanying the smiles was the song Expression of Love conveying that smiles are the most frequently seen expression, and blessings are the most frequently heard greetings in the New Year. During the interludes came New Year greetings in different languages from regions all over the world.
When the song-and-dance performance -- Sharing the Peace -- took the spotlight, 15 local expatriates including Brian, Sheena, Michelle and Moses from Zhuhai TPR and GLV language schools walked onto the stage with Mr Wu, a white-haired man in traditional Chinese red attire, taking the lead. They walked slowly about the stage, waving and blowing kisses to the audience. With the world looking on, they extended warm New Year greetings to the immense audience on behalf of all the expatriates in Zhuhai.
Sweden's most famous pianist, Robert Wells, walked on stage while voices in the background heralded blessings. He played China's Moon -- a musical piece he had composed especially to show his deep feelings toward this ancient oriental country.
Olympics Games champion hurdler Liu Xiang, wrapped in the national flag, ran onto the stage at 11:20pm, arousing rapturous applause. Liu shouted out his greetings to the video camera in front of him: "No matter where you are in the world, if only you are Chinese, I'd like to extend my greetings to you: Happy New Year!"
When midnight loomed, well-known male soprano Dai Yuqiang sang Sleepless Tonight, a famous melody from Italian opera, to greet the New Year. The song was followed by a performance: Flowers, Snow & Sea, in which women in yellow symbolized flowers and men in blue indicated the sea. Artificial heavy snow came from the sky at that very moment, giving the illusion of North China while giving testimony that the City of Romance is true to its name.
While the floating clock over Ocean Spring Resort rang out the old year and rang in the new, splendid fireworks embellished the Sports Centre's open sky. At the stroke of midnight, celebrated Chinese singer Wei Wei began to sing the song Our New Year with a Norwegian female singer to usher in the Year 2006.
Vice Guangdong Governor Lei Yulan, CCTV Executive Vice Director Zhang Changming, China Travel Service (HK) Ltd Board Chairman Che Shujian and senior city officials including municipal Party Secretary Deng Weilong and Mayor Wang Shunsheng were in the audience.
