THE citys mangrove coverage area has reached 567 square kilometres recovering to a third of what was present two decades ago according to the municipal Wildlife Protection Office However the area of waterlogged soil that is suitable for growing mangroves is 17114 square kilometres the office said
Mangroves weaken wind solidify dams boost ecological diversity and purify seawater which was proven in July 2003 when typhoon Imbudo slammed into the coast of Enping with wind power above Force 10 The 10km dykes with 333 square-kilometres of mangroves were completely safe while the 5km dykes without the trees were almost destroyed causing losses of millions of RMB experts claim
Statistics show that direct economic losses caused by storm surges and other natural catastrophes hit 213 billion yuan 258 billion in coastal areas between 1990 and 1999 It is thus a major task for sustainable development to construct tsunami and storm-surge defence systems experts point out A shelter forest belt featuring mangroves in coastal areas significantly maintains ecological safety by inhibiting winds stabilizing sands and conserving water and soil
Located at the Pearl River mouth with a coastline extending 1528 kilometres and island shores of 60122 kilometres Zhuhai has a 5-metre-deep waterlogged soil area of 78368 square kilometres of which 17114 square kilometres are ideal for mangroves 30-fold the existing area There is considerable space for planting mangroves experts confirm
A large number of local areas are suitable for mangroves without any changes in terrain while others need some reclamation for example the 10km-long swamps along Lovers Road experts say A new and clourful multilevel landscape can be expected should a mangrove belt dozens of metres wide be planted along Lovers Road for dozens of kilometres experts envision
Mangroves covered 145 square kilometres in 1984 However the area had been decreased sharply to 102 square kilometres by 1999 for seashore reclamation and road and bridge construction Only 32 square kilometres of natural mangroves had been left by that time
In an aim to restore the mangrove area the municipal government began in 1998 to earmark 12 million yuan 145000 to plant mangroves each year In 2002 the Guangdong Provincial Forestry Bureau appropriated 1 million yuan
121000 to grow mangroves and increase species along the Pearl River mouth The mangrove artificial planting area on Qiao Island has become the largest in the Pearl River Delta and the country as well
A mechanism by which the municipal government guides and farmers develop through market operation is being established and social organizations businesses and individuals are encouraged to expand the mangrove planting area according to the municipal Forestry Bureau
