Zhuhai native Yung Wing had established the Chinese Educational Mission CEM in Hartford in 1872 The mission brought 120 Chinese boy students to study in the US including five who studied at the Hartford Public High School Hartford is where Yung Wing built the Chinese Education Commission CEC lived the last ten years of his life and was buried Therefore it is of great significance for the two cities which share the proud tradition of Yung Wing to establish partnership in education the officials agreed

However the agreement remained on paper over the past few months due to various reasons and Henry decided to come and see what they could do to push the project forward
Luwenstein a charming young woman responsible for hiring and supervising all social studies teachers in the school system as well as implementing curriculum is highly acclaimed as an organizer Social studies teachers in Hartford respect her ability to motivate and support their work Henry admitted that he had made a right and smart decision to bring her with him on this visit
On Wednesday morning they negotiated at Zhuhai No 1 High School with Zhuhai educational representative and Education Department Vice Director Wu Zhaoping as well as No 1 High School Principal Wang Weidi the specific terms of teacher and student exchanges They reached consensus that five Zhuhai teachers would be sent to Hartford public schools each time for three-months of research and then five Hartford teachers would be sent to Zhuhai to teach for three months Moreover students would be sent in groups for seven-to-ten-day visits following the initiation of the teacher exchange according to the agreement
Escorted by principals and English teachers Henry and Luwenstein visited the TV Station the Information Centre and classrooms of the No 1 High School after their negotiations Showing great interest in the school TV station the visitors sat behind the newsdesk and role-played as news anchors which drew applause from the company Soon they found they would have a chance to show real presence on the school TV by being interviewed by a student reporter whom they admired for being courteous and bold enough at the same time to raise questions on hot issues such as American students holding hazing events and problems arising from that
Henry and Lowenstein sat in on a class at Zhuhai No 1 Middle School in the afternoon after which Lowenstein gave an overhead transparency presentation on Teaching Method Theory Practice Teachers from No 1 High School and Middle School actively questioned her about teaching methods and showed much appreciation for her instructions
An after-class encounter with senior grade-three students at Zhuhai No 2 High School on Thursday morning greatly delighted the two visitors Luwenstein found it interesting that the students asked what she thought of US President George W Bush and showed strong opposition to Bushs Iraq policy They felt free to ask her opinion about many world hot issues and discussed some differences between Chinese and US students Their intense curiosity about out-of-school issues greatly impressed Henry as well
Learning that the first floor of the Art Sports Building of No 2 High School serves as a swimming pool in summer and a ping-pong court in winter Henry said he itched to play ping-pong and was satisfied before lunch When they arrived at the student dormitory near the library Henry tried speaking Chinese while Principal Wang Weiguo tried English at the English Corner poster on the first floor They put on a vivid cultural exchange in front of Vice Director Wu and some English teachers
The two distinguished American guests were warmly greeted at the school gate of Xiangzhou No 2 Elementary School in the afternoon Student representatives wearing red ribbons tied red scarves for Henry and Luwenstein to show their open-armed welcome and hospitality What amazed the two visitors next was the break-time exercise done simultaneously by 1700 students in yellow uniforms led by a seven-year-old girl standing on the stone stairway They asked the little girl to come up to them at the end and spoke highly of her performance The shy child responded with Thank youin a low voice Students who had finished the exercise waved lively and said Hello as they passed by
In the stairs conference room around 100 teachers and students along with Henry and Luwenstein listened to the briefing on the school made by Headmaster Lu Qiulian and a grade-three student English class In the class 50 students learned English phrases by means of music pictures role-plays and question/answer games As teaching experts Henry and Luwenstein were asked to comment on the class afterwards which was followed by questions raised by both students and English teachers from various elementary schools
The busy day ended with a visit to Yung Wings former residence in Nanping Town where there remains only a wall and the Zhenxian School built by Yung Wing Henry and Luwenstein were very pleased to know that the school is to be renovated by the municipal government into the Yung Wing Memorial Hall
When asked about their impressions of Zhuhai schools Henry and Luwenstein agreed that Zhuhai Yung Wing School where they gave a PowerPoint presentation of the assessment system in US schools and exchanged ideas with dozens of teachers on their arrival day is the most beautiful; whereas No 1 High School No 2 High School and Xiangzhou No 2 Elementary School are the most outstanding and impressive
