It is a city of contrasts -- old and new peaceful and noisy poor and rich beautiful and ugly smelly in places and blessed with fresh ocean breezes There are many tree-clad mountains portions of which are excavated to make way for the new It has an efficient bus system and taxis cruise the streets tooting their horns looking to pick up passengers It also has a full range of eating places -- anything from 5 RMB to a 50-200 RMB a meal depending on ones taste and income MacDonalds and KFC are also present adapting their products to various Chinese tastes Beautiful parks are everywhere and major streets are landscaped with flowers and well-trimmed hedges Major apartment construction projects are visible everywhere reflecting an anticipated increase in the citys population due to its ambience and proximity to Hong Kong and Macao I have been in Zhuhai several years now A few of the younger locals that I frequently see on my way to and from school wave and say a few words of greeting -- some in English and some in Chinese Otherwise most pass by expressionless or exclaiming gao Im 2 metres tall or talking on their mobile phones semi-oblivious to the rest of the world around them Inside GLV it is a different world All students and Chinese staff are friendly and most work diligently carrying out their respective duties I particularly enjoy helping the students to improve their English skills and we often have great laughs together when things get confused with he and she and other such confusing things in the English language I feel very fortunate to be in a school that has total immersion English 9am to 9pm each day for its students and has earned a good reputation for being one of the best English schools in China I also feel lucky to be associated with such wonderful people students and staff alike and pray that in some small way I am helping them to build a new China that will play a leadership role in making the world a better world for all of its present and future global citizens Ed Muttart is an English teacher at GLV
